The Kia Telluride is here, so there’s no hurry for the next-gen Sorento, right? Wrong! The company’s original three-row SUV is under development right now, and we’ve managed to catch the very first prototype while testing. The mid-size crossover was crossing Swiss Alps when we took the spy shots. Surprisingly, the camouflaged prototype was escorted by the BMW X5, so we suppose that the Korean carmaker has comparing driving dynamics of these two.
New Platform For The 2021 Kia Sorento
Speaking of which, the successor will most definitely improve its handling, comfort, and efficiency. That’s going to happen thanks to a new architecture and new drivetrain options. According to our insiders, the 2021 Kia Sorento will get a platform which will be shared with several models from Hyundai. Allegedly, the new underpinning will make the SUV slightly larger and more rigid. Some reports claim that the redesigned model could lose some weights too, but that’s not confirmed so far.
Under The Hood
On the other hand, we are sure about more efficient powertrains since the automaker works on the 2021 Sorento Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid. Reportedly, the second option will have the ability to travel sole on electricity around 30 miles. Regarding the non-electric SUV, Kia will make a new topping option which will exploit a turbo-four engine capable of delivering over 300 horsepower. In addition, the new Sorento will exploit an improved 8-speed auto transmission. The option will not only be smoother but will also deliver superior responses to the terrain, especially for the AWD models.
Styling changes are deeply buried beneath the camouflage, so we have no clue what’s going to be different when the 2021 Kia Sorento arrives. The tailgate around back is definitely different. This way, the company tries to hide not only the shape of the trunk but also the SUV’s length. The new profile hints pretty flat roofline, while sides reveal new side mirrors which migrated from A-pillars to the front doors. Up front, the mid-size crossover SUV looks quite interesting: the new front fascia is most likely boxier from today’s model, while the grille and headlights seem to be less pronounced. All the way down, the prototype shows an aggressive bumper with bigger air intakes. What we can’t see right now, yet it’s going to happen are the latest driving aids and better convenience features, including the all-new infotainment matched with a larger touchscreen.
